| Recife, Brazil. Three skirts sprawl across the floor of the pátio of San Pedro. They are made of silk, with a 10 meter diameter each, woven with the colors of Maracatu. On the patio, the seamstresses work in order to unite the skirts into one dress only, a dress with three tips. Letícia Cardoso’s performance begins here; on the hands of the seamstresses of Maracatu, on the bodies of the singers of Iemanjá. Chanting songs of the Queen of the waters, Orisha of the sea, the female voices echo in space, striking a dialogue with the culture of the city. The bodies intent shy and circular movements, look for a place in the limits imposed by the skirts. The dress moves slowly as if awoken by the song of the waters. It is born in the roots of popular culture and goes on its way. It goes to the streets, travels, goes from place to place, comes to contact with other worlds, cities, people. It moves, it folds up. In every situation it encounters it adapts itself, even by changing its name. It is a work in a constant transformation that unfolds into many different works. And now it’s full of scars, in the repose of the desert. |
